WVCT Junior Team Welcome to the Pacific Power Blue Sky junior cycling development program! Our objective is fairly simple. We want to get kids exposed to cycling while providing them with the necessary skills and fitness training to enable them to be successful and to grow into a sport that holds a lifetime of fun and exciting challenges and possibilities. Our program is open to kids 14 to 18 years old (age as of Dec 31), both boys and girls. Our primary Team focus is road racing, but many riders, especially younger ones, tend to find cyclocross much more fun. Many folks on the Team participate in the immensely popular sport of cyclocross (akin to steeple chase on a bike) where the speeds are slower, there is not pack to keep up with, and the racing is much more fun and festive with lots of spectators and shorter races than typically found on the road circuit. If you don't have a bike, DON'T worry. In 2009, our Team began using proceeds from our annual fund raising events to purchase cyclocross bikes (which can be used as road bikes, too). These are available for short term loans for events like races and organized training/practice until you decide to get your own. Our Team also has access to tremendous discounts through our sponsors, so if you like cycling, there are opportunities to purchase a bike and gear at very good prices. Races happen all year, and are generally on weekends.
The only requirement is to race 6 events in a year. This is fairly easily since there are over 300 events per year from late January through mid Dec. It's very easy to find 6 events within an hour drive of your home. Many of the team members are willing to help the kids get to events, but we strongly encourage the parents to get involved in supporting this healthy life-long sport. If you think you're interested in bike racing, please contact Jim Fischer (president "at" willamettevalleycycling.com) to find out more about how to get involved.
